Behind not your History Textbook, lies a strong conviction towards preserving the stories of the ones who paved the way.
For many young Singaporeans today, the heard-of World War 2 horrors are often confined to textbooks and museums as merely reduced political events, dates and facts. But for millions of older folks, their pain was real and lived through.
I believe that by showcasing raw and heartfelt stories of that era, history can be perceived more than that, and felt, as a vivid tapestry of real lives and experiences.
Not your History Textbook is inspired by my admiration for Singapore’s Pioneer Generation, the ones who’ve arguably seen Singapore through its worst and witnessed the growth of it all, and by my belief that History is shaped by the experiences of everyday people, something we tend to overlook. Behind Singapore’s global reputation, its top-ranking GDP, and its world-strong passport, lie the wrinkled hands of courage and labour of our Pioneers.
This is history as it was lived, not your History Textbook.
